Our agents have retrieved what we believe to be "top secret" information regarding changes in climate in the Indian Ocean region. It is believed that the ocean may have played a role in the climate change matter. We believe this information is contained on a CD-ROM disc.

Mission:

Your mission--if you choose to accept it--is to retrieve (get) that information from the disc and report back to the Admiral at headquarters.

View the Ocean Drilling Program's "Mountains to Monsoons" CD-ROM to find answers to the questions below:

  1. What is meant by the term "monsoons"? Why would the Ocean Drilling Program be interested in the monsoons?
  2. Describe the characteristics of monsoons and tell where one might find them.
  3. Explain how sediment can tell a person about past environments. Give a couple of examples of things you can learn about past environments from sediment.
  4. Explain how scientists are able to reconstruct changes in Earth through time from a series of sedimentary layers. What does each layer represent?
  5. Find out how mountains and monsoons are related.

Good Luck!

Assessment:

Your completed report will be assessed on how well you have answered the puzzling questions above. Be thorough and cite examples where appropriate.
