Understanding our present environment is crucial to understanding past environments and how they were created. This concept is the fundamental building block for all geologists. Scientists devote their lives to studying present conditions, so that past environments can be reasonably reconstructed. Once the processes that formed this planet are understood, we can then build upon this information to plan for the future. The ultimate goal is to understand the past well enough to interpret our future...
