Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command

The Navy has set up a comprehensive site for oceanography education, complete with lesson plans, activities for students, and much more. The link here leads to their pages on waves and tides. Coupled with very nice graphics, the topics presented on are waves, the anatomy of a wave, the birth of a wave, the growth of a wave, dynamics of a wave, and sea or swell. Each topic area comes complete with graphics (usually) and a description.

Louisiana State University (LSU)

Developed at LSU, this site houses four interactive lessons and a teachers page. The information taught here centers around erosion taking place along the Louisiana coast line. Throughout the lessons, several useful graphics are tied into either background information or the activities themselves, which look at different effects and areas of the erosion itself. Such skills as cooperative learning, map reading, and critical thinking come into play as a class goes through the lessons.

North Carolina State University

North Carolina State University has developed a whole "teacher terminal" on the Carolina Coastline and the erosion taking place there. This science resource is inquiry-based and takes the students through several different areas of erosion and poses though provoking questions to get the students thinking. The site has an educators guide, inquiry images with questions about each image, a photo journal, and a guide through the technology used in coastal research. This site is a treat for teacher of both primary and secondary grades. There is an outline to guide a teacher through the information and activities for them to chose the best path for their class.

University of Washington

Quoted directly from the site: "This site has been developed with a broad audience in mind; consequently, it contains extensive background information that is intended primarily for the general public, including information about the mechanics (physics) of tsunami generation and propagation, the impact of tsunamis on humankind, and the Tsunami Warning System." This site offers a very thorough look into the tsunami and is a valuable resource to its users.
